Chapter 6: The Survey Corps

**************

"I am Survey Corps Commander Erwin Smith,” he boomed. “Today you choose which division to join. The reason I am up here is to invite you to join the Survey Corps. But I should warn you, in the recent Titan attack everyone experienced how terrifying they can be and how much limited power you have.” The Commander said.

You shuddered thinking of just how right he was. The bodies of littering the streets or their screams as they were being eaten.

"However, the human race advanced towards victory like never before. By now, everyone is aware of the existence of Eren Yeager. By risking his own life, he has proven himself a friend to humanity."

Nobody had seen Eren since he was taken away. You had heard about Erens trail from Armin. He told you how Eren was beaten up by Humanities Strongest Soldier in order to prove a point. Thankfully that point allowed Eren to be placed in the Survey Corps. If he was placed in the MP, he would have surely been dead.

"Thanks to him, the Titan invasion was halted and we now have a path to understand the true nature of Titans."

You snapped your head up to look at him. Whispers travels through the crow like wildfire.

"We believe in his basement of his home in Shinagashina, lie the answers to the Titans. If we can find that basement, we can end the Titans. We will head for the basement in Shinagashina but in order to do that, we have to take back Wall Maria." He continued on. “In other words, our goal is still the same but now that we can no longer use the gate in Trost, we have no choice but to take a route from Karanes The path that took one of our battalions four years to clear is completely useless.  During those four years, sixty percent of the Survey Corps soldiers died. That’s sixty percent in four years.” He emphasized the last part. "An insane figure."

An insane figure indeed. You were starting to convince yourself not to join. You would be more useful in the Garrison but could you stand staying behind a wall as Mariana and Flynn fight?

"You who join the Survey Corps will participate in an expedition beyond the walls one month from now. Thirty percent of you will not return. In four years, most of you will be dead."

That sent a ripple of fear and uncertainty through the crowd of Cadets. Those who were thinking of joining the Scouting Legion were now second guessing themselves, you included.

"But," he said, "Those who survive will have a higher mortality rate. Know these facts, the one who wish to risk their lives may stay." He looked around at the nervous and uncertain faces. "Ask yourself, 'Are you willing to give your beating heart to humanity?'" Silence ensued. "That is all. Those who want to join another branch are dismissed."

It started with one, then two and finally groups. Cadets walked past you and towards the exit to join the Garrison or MP in one rare case. Flynn stood next to you with a grim face. He would not move. Mariana was debating, she turned her head towards the exit as if she wanted to follow but she promised herself to become strong and protect her friends. She snapped her head forehead and let tears fall down her face. Jean, Sasha and Connie were in their dilemma as well. Join or Die? Joining a safer corps or die outside the walls?

A grisly image came to mind. You saw how Titans ate humans. Jean let out an agonizing yell. You didn't blame him. He had saw Marcos dead body. Annie found Mina's dead body. You were overcome by grief, some soldiers went mad with it.

You looked up at the blue moon. It truly was beautiful but it didn't help you choose.

More Cadets passed you and they began to thin out. This was your only chance to leave. You looked around at the people who decided to stay. They joined the Military ready to throw away their lives. Could you do the same? Could you offer your heart up? What was there to live for other than killing Titans? You started to feel your resolve evaporate as you took a step back.

There was one thing you could live for, the promise of freedom. You promised to live in freedom for somebody who couldn't. You made that promise and you were not going to go back on it. With that in mind, you walked back to the group with a new purpose.

Walking back to the group with clenched fists and shaky legs, you didn't notice the stares of the the others. Standing next to Mariana and Sasha, you looked up to see that Connie, Sasha, Jean, Ymir, Reiner, Christa, Mikasa, Armin, Flynn, Mariana and a few others stayed. You were making the right choice. You were sure of it. You would achieve your ultimate freedom by leaving these accursed Walls.

The Commander raised an eyebrow at you as you walked back and took your place amongst your comrades. He respected the fact that you could overcome your doubt. "Can you die if your ordered to?" He asked. It felt like he was asking you.

"We have no intention of dying, sir!" You said.

"I see," A light smile graced his face. "I like the look on your faces." He looked up and said, "Then I hereby welcome you to the Survey Corps. This is a true salute. Offer up your hearts!" He saluted to you. You raised your clenched fist over your heart, offering the blood that ran through it, to humanity.

"Everyone..." Armin looked at all of you with a disbelieving smile.

"This is terrible." Jean said to himself. "The Survey Corps..."

"Marco would have been proud." You said. You could see Jean flinch.

"(Name....) I'm scared...." Sasha whimpered next to you. "I want to go home..."

"I do, too." Flynn said. He looked as his was going to hurl either from excitement or despair.

"Whatever.....I don't even care." Connie said even though his face was twisted with a sad smile.

       Reiner and Bertholt
were silent but Bertholt was sweating profusely. Poor guy. Christa was crying silently but Ymir noticed. "If you going to cry, why bother joining?" She said harshly.

"You have done well to overcome your fear. You are brave soldiers indeed. You all have my heartfelt respect." Commander Erwin said.

You stood there in silence. You were going to fulfill your promise to be free and live. Nothing would stop you. Not your family and definitely not your past.

**************

"Oi Brat, what's your name?" The man in front of you asked. The same man who saved you from being munched by a Titan.

"(Name) (Lastname,) sir!" You saluted. You looked strait ahead and avoided his eyes.

"Stable duty with Kierstein." He said bluntly.

       "Huh?" Your mouth hung open.

"Did I stutter?" He asked. His grey eyes flashed intimidatingly.

"No, sir." You said with your best strait face. He turned around and started to inspect the other new cadets that joined the Survey Corps.

This was Lance Corporal.....Captain.....or was it Heichou? Whatever! This was Humanity's Strongest Soldier. It was obvious why he got that name, the way he took down those Titans and saved the four of you was just plain badass.

"Dismissed." The Corporal was done with intimidating the newbies and assigning chores so that meant you were dismissed.

"Oi, Jeanny boy. Looks like you and I got horse poop duty. Now I can meet you family." You said cheerily despite being given chores, you were looking forward to Horseface jokes.

"Shut up, (Name!)" Jean growls. You just laugh as the both of you make your way to the stables where the horse were.

After three hours of shoveling horse poop, meeting Jeans family and making side they were all well fed, Jean and you handed back into the building.

The both of you walked into the mess hall and grabbed the usual which consisted of bread and milk. You sat down next to Sasha who was asking Mariana for food.

"So how the Survey Corps?" You ask politely in order to start a conversation.

"It's not so bad," Christa said. Ymir gave a indifferent shrug.

"So what do you think of the Survey Corps?" Armin asked.

         "I like it."

         "That's it?" Eren asked.

"No, Eren. I absolutely hate here and wished I joined the MP instead." You said sarcastically.

"Shut up, (Name.)" Eren throws a piece of bread at you. It bounces off your head and lands on the table. You stick out your tongue as Sasha takes the piece.

It was good to see Eren again. You never saw him after his military trial. It's been a few interesting days for everyone.

You scanned the room around you. Bertholdt and Reiner were sitting together. Armin, Mikasa and Eren were sitting across from you. You were seated between Mariana and Sasha. Connie and Flynn were off playing a prank on Jean. YOu would have joined them but you didn't want more chores than you already had. Commander Erwin was sitting with the Squad Leaders. Hanji, the four eyed women you met, was talking excitingly about Titans and whatnot. Captain Levi looked absolutely bored with it. Your eyes ended up staring a bit longer at the Corporal. He lifted his grey eyes from his tea for a bit as your exchanged glances. You turned back around acting as if nothing had happened.

"We'll," you got up. "I'm heading to bed. We have training in the morning before we discuss Expidition details. Night." You wave your group goodnight.

"I think I get some rest." Mikasa says. She falls into step next to you.

"What did you really join the Survey Corps?" Mikasa asks after moments of silence.

"I felt like the Garrison had enough people," you chuckled. Mikasa turned her eyes and stared into your eyes. She wasn't trying to intentionally intimidate you but you could tell she wanted to know. "To be free. Cliche but I want to out of these walls. I'm so sick of looking at them. I want to the see the sky entirely without having some stupid wall in my face. I feel like the sky in this cage isn't big enough for me."

        "We have one month."

"I'm excited for some reason." You said. Mikasa bid you goodnight as she went into her room. You opened the door and closed it. You shared a room with Mariana. Sasha and Mikasa shared a room while Ymir and Christa shared one. There were two beds, a single window, two desks and a bookshelf. Yup, home sweet home for the rest of your life. Cozy.

You slip off your harnesses and you jacket. You changed into a tank top and some shorts before jumping into bed. Turing around, you faced the window. There was nothing around you but nature. It made looking at the stars so much easier now that you were away from civilization.

Closing your eyes, you rested for the busy first day.

*************

"Attention!" You saluted as the blond man in front of you inspected the group of recruits. There weren't many.

Captain Levi stepped in front of the groups of Cadets, standing next to the blonde guy. He was considerable short next to him.

"At ease." The blonde man said. He wasn't like Erwin. His hair was a paler shade of blonde but was parted a different way. He had a very prominent nose. There was a light mustache and stubble on his chin. The thing you noticed we're his eyes, they were rather sharp and observant as if he could catch any little detail.

For the rest of the morning, you were paired off to practice hand to hand combat. You squared off with Mariana.

       "Ready?"

"Born ready!" Mariana charged at you with the knife. You sidestepped and grabbed her arm pinning it to her back. She gave you a good back ward kick in the shin you released your grip on her. She spun around and tried to punch you in your face. You leaned backwards and flipped backwards. You got into another stance. Mariana still had the knife in her hand. She aimed to stab you and you brought your elbow down onto her arm. She let go of the knife as she fell backwards. You held the knife in one hand and held out your other. "Again?"

"Again."she swept her braid back and tried to disarm you.

************

      "(Name,)" Jean said.

"Yes, Jean?" You inspect the wooden knife in your hand.

"Please get off me." He said. You were sitting on his back with his arm twisted under you.

"Let me think about it?" You twisted his arm again. "No."

"Are you still mad about the bucket of water this morning? It was Connie's and Flynn's fault."

"Yes, Corporal Levi found out and I have stable duty."

      "What's so bad about that?"

"As much as I love your family Jean, I hate stable duty."

"Well too bad, too sad." He said with a shit eating grin.

You smirked. "I told him it was Connie, Flynn and you who pranked me."

He groaned and let his face faceplant into the ground. "Get off me!"

"Fine." You let Jean up as the both of you report to stable duty again.

****************

You finished putting new hay in the stable as Connie finished brushing a brown colored horse.

"Damnit, (Name!)" Flynn growled out as he loaded the horse poop into a wheelbarrow.

"Your fault for pranking me." You said. You hold the pitchfork in your hand as you glare at Flynn and Connie.

"You didn't have to bring me down as well." Jean said as he polished the saddles.

"I could have baled you out but I wanted to meet your family." You whined. Connie hid his snicker with a cough.

"When did this even start?" He asked. Jean just facepalmed.

"This started because your such a neigh-sayer." You elbowed Flynn. You wore a shit eating grin as you smiled at your own joke. Flynn covered his mouth in order to stop laughing.

"That was lame excuse of a joke." Jean said unamused.

"Why must you rein in on my parade?" You asked with mock hurt.

"For the love of--not these again. Having Eren and Reiner was enough." Jean groaned.

      "Don't whine, Jean."

"(Name.....) I swear....." he growled beneath his breath.

"What's that, Jean? I couldn't hear you. Are you okay or is your voice getting horse?" Connie and Flynn were both laughing at Jeans misfortune.

You stopped and patted Jean on the back. "Sorry about that, Jean."

      "It's fine, (Name.)" he said.

"Thanks, Jean. You know your my mane man."

"Damnit, (Name!)" You were doubled over laughing.

"What's so funny, Cadets?" Someone asked. You didn't notice the laughing stop.

"Nothing. We were just horsing around," You said as you came face to face with Corporal Levi, "Sir." you added lamely as remembered to salute your superior. 'Crap. I'm dead. I'm so dead.'

"I can't believe we're letting idiots in," he said. You bit the inside of your cheek, you had a smart ass comment but you decided to say nothing. "Well, care to explain?"

Jean decided to be a brave soul and step forward. "We were taking care of the stable and we got a bit distracted, sir."

"The three of you are dismissed." He said. Jean smirked while Connie and Flynn gave you looks of pity. "Now then. What was so funny?" he asked again.

"Nothing, sir. We were just goofing off a bit." You said.

"Is that so?" He asked. "You will be cleaning the castle with Jeager as punishment for goofing off."

      "That's not too bad."

"Then you'll be assisting Squad Leader Hanji Zoe with her Titan experiments."

"Ok. Once again, that doesn't seem too bad." A amused glint itself into his eyes.

"What's you kill record, Cadet?" Levi asked you.

"Last time I checked it was seventeen but then I lost count after Eren sealed the hole in Trost, sir" You started counting on your fingers how many you killed.

"You'll be cleaning dishes as punishment. I'll expect you to be at my office at five in the morning sharp. Finish your duties here, Cadet." He turned on his heels and walked away from you.

You stood there dumfounded. You realized three things.

One, the Corporal is a clean freak. Two, He was Humanities Shortest Soldier. And three, he was going to make your life hell.
